Viva la Revlución: 4 legislators visited Cuba with lobbyist

by DPR News Staff rotunda

Four of eight California legislators  – three Democrats and one Republican – enjoyed a rather exotic and questionable Spring Break out of the country. In Cuba.

Asm. Majority Leader Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), Asm. Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles) were outed as another two legislators who joined an 8-member junket to Cuba with Sacramento lobbyist Darius Anderson, CalWatchDog reported on Thursday. Previously, State Sen. Cathleen Galgiani (D-Livingston) and Asm. Katcho Achadjian (R-San Luis Obispo) were revealed to have travelled to Havana with the crew.

The trip included, according to Achadjian included, among other things, a tour of cigar-making factory and a castle, salsa lessons, and rooftop cocktails, the San Luis Obispo Tribune reported.

CWD's John Hrabe reported that neither Mitchell nor Atkins paid for the trip with taxpayer funds. Atkins' deputy chief of staff did admit that the Leader used campaign funds to cover the expenses.

According to the SLO Tribune report, Achadjian also used campaign funds, but reimbursed his campaign committee to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.
